NVEC Conducting Annual Grid Automation Load Shed Test
NVEC will conduct its annual load shed test of field automation systems on Wednesday, December 10, between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. This scheduled test is a critical part of ensuring the cooperative’s ability to respond quickly and reliably during high-impact grid events, extreme weather, or regional transmission emergencies.
During the test, members may experience a brief, planned outage lasting approximately 7 minutes in selected areas of the service territory. Notifications via phone and text message will be sent to impacted members in advance when possible.
This yearly test verifies that automated controls work properly — allowing crews and system operators to:
- Respond instantly to grid emergencies
- Maintain system stability during regional power shortages
- Reduce the duration and scope of outages
- Protect critical infrastructure and community safety
Automation plays a major role in maintaining reliability during high-stakes grid events, enabling the cooperative to restore service faster, isolate faults more efficiently, and protect the overall health of the electric system when outside conditions are most challenging. Conducting this test ensures these safeguards perform as designed when they are needed most.
